A hot air balloon caught fire and crashed on the morning of Saturday, June 21, in Praia Grande, Santa Catarina, Brazil, while carrying 21 people. So far, authorities have confirmed eight deaths and 13 survivors. The cause of the accident has not yet been determined.

According to initial reports and testimonies, the pilot—considered experienced—attempted to descend when the flames began and, moments later, advised the passengers to bail out in anticipation of the imminent tragedy.

Witness videos showed the moment a hot air balloon began to burn in the air , causing some passengers to jump out in a desperate attempt to save themselves. “People were jumping out, it was horrible,” said one witness.

The fire quickly consumed the basket and part of the balloon , the remains of which fell into a wooded area. Emergency teams arrived at the scene with ambulances and rescue personnel.

Santa Catarina Governor Jorginho Mello announced via his X account that they continue to provide support to the victims and their families , and expressed his solidarity with the affected city. In a subsequent video, he reiterated his commitment to following the tragedy, after speaking with the local mayor and requesting support from the health and fire services.
